If there is anyone out there who has been keeping an eye on Ainslie Days, then they will know that there has been no movement for a long time. There is good reason for this: both of us have been busy with work, study and travel abroad, but, more importantly, we are about to move out of Ainslie. Yes, that means our days in Ainslie are numbered. Actually, we have probably a week left in Ainslie before we move to another suburb in Canberra. The question then arises, what do we do with Ainslie Days? Do we retire the site, the space and the silliness to history or do you, the readers, want us to continue our blogging but from a new location?

Oh, and before I forget, I guess you need a little something to laugh at. Here is a link to the dangers of running. Who would have thought running (machines) could be so dangerous! Link here.

I first saw this ad when I went to Argentina this time, and I so much like it! This is happening in a blokes' night, and one of them says: "guys, listen to this. And the guys (individually and mentally) start to count how many are in the room (ironically ten and see their reaction, it's hilarious), until the one who was busy choosing the background music (he obviously didn't know what was going on) joins the team and says: "what, do I like you?" ... I find that I have a clutter of tags on my Firefox browser of sites that I have been meaning to upload on you our blog.

First up there are some silly pics that I saw through the week - some used cows for sale, a Darth Vader hot air balloon and a gigantic stair sculpture.

Another fascinating site I came across was A Moment on Earth. This site is an interesting mosaic of pictures from all over the world that enlarge as you run your mouse over the picture.

This week The Register had a number of articles on technology biting back. There was self-combusting toilets in Japan, a carnivorous ATM machine in Florida, a kamikaze hybrid car attacking a petrol station and a robot that declared that humans taste of bacon! Oh what a terror technology can be!

It has been a long and busy week. So by the time Sunday comes around I am feeling rather tired and not wanting to spend too much time in front of the computer.

Through the week i came across a few web sites that I thought I might post to the blog. In order to de-clutter my FF browser here they are:

First of all, BBC reports of the annual Zombie walk in Brisbane. Always knew the further north you went the weirder the people got!
Richard Dwarkins (re-)posted a review he wrote on Intellectual Impostures. The same review was also published as Postmodernism Disrobed in Nature. If you like Dwarkin's writings then you will like this one too! Find it here.
One of the links from the bottom of Dwarkin's article is to a post modern essay generator run by a guy from Monash Uni. While the link from the article didn't seem to work, I managed to track the page down and it is quite funny. Hit the refresh button on your browser to get a new, fully referenced pomo paper - here.
Thanks to Neatorama blog I found a nice little game called "Five minute to kill (yourself)" to take my mind of work - enjoy!
My favourite enviro-watch website, Treehugger, had a couple of interesting articles on solar power. One was on the largest thin-film solar plant opening in Germany (here) and the other was a snippet from elsewhere claiming that with six global solar sites running on 8% efficiency they could produce enough energy for the world (here). Depressing to think that such global cooperation seems so distant.

Over the weekend I intended to post a few links to some wacky sites I came across but after spending a good full day looking up Chinese characters I had had enough of sitting in front of the computer and went home. Don't worry I kept the links just for you dear reader.

Over on Worth 100 they have a great page of counterfeit/hacked art - quite fun to have a look at. As we are all now globe trotting it is important to keep an eye out for monsters and monsterguide provides a very informative and helpful field guide to monsters of the world. While on the topic of monsters, should you come across any and feel your deep seated superhuman powers come to the fore, then coolhunter reports that Bonds are now offering the opportunity to design your own superhero undies, now how groovy is that!

As you may have already seen I try and post up an interesting word for the day. Usually I just come across these words in my reading and when I don't know them, like any good scholar, I look them up. Yesterday I found and interesting article on the Latin roots of English words on The Straight Dope. Who would have thought the word "boogie" comes saltatio Bogudis (dance of Bogud)! I just thought it was a more polite word for snot! ;) Another good site for learning languages and that provides a wealth of free materials is the FSI. Another good language learning site is How-to-learn-any-language.com. Lastly, while on language I will give you today's interesting word, that come from my room mate Michael. Numinous - an adjective meaning 1.) Of or relating to a numen; supernatural, 2.) Filled with or characterized by a sense of a supernatural presence: a numinous place, 3) Spiritually elevated; sublime.

Monday morning and start up my trust machine and go through my regular round of websites. Today on lifehacker I found a good number of fascinating links. One of the many dangers we face is aliens. Even my father-in-law had a run in with a UFO while living on the farm in Paraguay. In order to protect yourself you can't go past a good tin foil hat. On ericisgrat.com he provides a very suave collection this seasons latest hats. No doubt we will see them on the catwalks very soon! Often while working on my PhD I find I have to send off a quick ransom note, usually to a librarian, and now joshuary.com provides an on-line ransom note generator. How helpful is that! Coming from London, where it is obviously rather dangerous to sleep at night, comes a bedside self defence kit courtesy of jamesmcadam.co.uk. And last but not least, a fortune cookie site, this time though perhaps it should be called an "[un]fortunate cookie" or "[bad] fortune cookie".

Yesterday afternoon I went to El Ateneo bookstore on Av. Santa Fe, looking for some books on Koreans in Argentina. To my surprise, when I arrived to the store I found HUGE number of ladies from all age spectrum surrounding the bookstore. And proportionally small number of police and giant security guys (I felt VERY small). Obviously they were not there because of my arrival (as my ego wanted to believe), but my innate curiosity gave up to the humidity of the day pushing me straight into very well air-conditioned bookstore. And the security guys (ultra men in black) inside too. Yet the bookstore was so nice I did not bother investigating what was going on.

At the end of my expedition I realised the crowd was still there, growing and growing in number. Total mitosis. So I went to ask to the policeman "Señor, señor, what is going on here? " His facial expression clearly said 'she is obviously not from this planet' and told me that Chayanne (a singer from Puerto Rico) was there to launch his new album and to meet his fan. "Ah," I thought. "It is only Chayanne. Never liked his songs and gosh, look at these girls! A collective hystheria!" (look who's talking, I am the person who had a massive two-metres long New Kids On The Block poster glued to my door back in... the 80s!!!)

Then this morning... I learnt that VIGGO MORTENSEN is also in Buenos Aires!!! Last night was the premier of his new movie "Alatriste (the entire movie is spoken in Spanish. He has a perfect porteño accent, btw)" at a cinema in Puerto Madero, AND I DIDN'T KNOW THAT!!! HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE, HOW, HOW, HOW! And then this evening, when I switched the TV to my usual Telefe, who was there? VIGGO! Talking about his team, San Lorenzo de Almagro!!! You want to know what my basal reaction was? I grabbed one of the chairs and I sat very very close to the TV screen, as if that would transform my physical body into binary codes and ZAS! Matrix and Viggo Mortensen. I only got the final end of the interview (why why why!!!) so when I thought I needed something to wipe the excess of hypersalivation HE was gone again. No more Viggo. Gone. Se fueeeeeeeeeeeeㅠ.ㅠ!

Well, I am going to use the blog as a sort of "Dear Diary" thing. I should have started this earlier, but I have been busy being a good tourist:-). Whilst I promise I will post sometime later the what'bouts of previous 26 days, I decided to start this today because I am all cranky. I shouldn't have left the apartment today as I walked four straight hours just because I can't read map. Or, because I read map upside-down and inside-out. I am a gifted child (this surely will make my parents proud... things I do to be a good daughter) who was born without any sense of direction. I surely got this part of my DNA all wrong from some strange mutation I suffered while I was in mum's tummy. And the shock was when I finally found the place (Centre for Latin American Migration Studies), I discovered that the library was closed! And what about all that info I found on web, ah? They should be working everyday, from 9.30 to 16.30 except for Wednesdays that goes to 12.30!!! I checked it last night, bummer!

And how I battled that mood? With a couple of supa-yummy alfajores de maizena with thick layer of dulce de leche (photos will come soon) and a nice cup of mate cocido. I am very easy to please:-). Now, whilst my flat feet were (they still are) killing me as you wouldn't believe, I switched to Telefe (Argentinean TV station) that was broadcasting Brazilian soap called "Bellisima". I have to say, I still love Brazilian dramas:-). When I thought that I was in a qualitatively improved mood, what happens? Suddenly Telefe is all in talking about this huge blond Brazilian beauty who came to Gran Hermano (Big Brother) as "cultural exchange" from Brazilian Big Brother... (visualise me shaking the head and heaving sigh after sigh) ... I discovered the fact that I am actually from the good ol' school and I am not interested watching a bloke soaping his armpits, thank you very much. And then I thought... what about my tired feet, ah? They could be news too...

Yerba Mate mates!

Hola!

After a long flight from Argentina and a bus trip from Syd to the 'berra I am finally back home! Mentally and physically I am still a bit tired but I am back at uni and getting back to work.

To kick off this post-holiday post I have to make reference to my new Yerba Mate mate, Michael. Michael and I share an office at uni. I brought him back a Guampa (Paraguayan tea cup), Bombilla (steel straw) and a big packet of Yerba Mate tea so now as we each delve into our research we do so sipping exquisite herbal tea! Oh the joys of pre modern research! Also Michael has just made himself a blog, Churchmainia, so keep an eye on it as he will no doubt be putting up lots of stuff on his research, his cartoons and his fondness for native NZ giraffes in their natural habitats, see here.

Will upload some pictures from Sth America along with some thoughts and impressions over the next few days.

Creo que hace un tiempito atras puse algo sobre la Mafalda, asi es que hoy voy por la ultima. Personalmente pienso que los alfajores artesanales argentinos deben ser reconocidos como tesoro nacional de la categoria tangible... y edible. En dos semanas el zinho y yo estamos volando a Buenos Aires, y lo primero que pienso hacer es normalizar mi alfajormetro que anda peligrosamente por el suelo. Uy, se estran~a a los alfajores de dulce de leche... empalagosos como pueden ser, pero igual se los extran~a... Breaking news - Lassie press conference

At 4:12 EST, Lassie, friend and long term confident of Chloe Doonkuna, called a press conference to ally cruel and malicious rumors that had been circulating in Pet-paparazzi circles.

For days word on the street was that Lassie was responsible for depositing a dead, half eaten mouse in the front yard of a suburban house in Ainslie, Canberra. Pooches throughout Canberra were agog that such a celebrity as Lassie would stoop to such low culinary standards.

Lassie's close friend, Chloe, when asked expressed her shock, "In all the years I have known Lassie, she has been nothing but true friend, who delighted in nothing more than a good pig trotter or a good serving of PAL. The thought that she might have even been tempted by a mouse is appallingly enough, let along the thought that she might have irresponsibly thrown it away in some poor person's front yard." Chloe did go on to comment, "Mind you, in recent years we have seen a resurgence in the dark side of the force..." When pushed for further explanation Chloe explained, " you know, the dark side, meow, you know."

The carefully staged press conference saw a cool and composed Lassie confront the press pack. In a pre-prepared statement which she read from Lassie denied all rumors and said that the press ought to hound not her but the source of this kind of behavior. While reluctant to name names, when pressed (and persuaded with a smacko and a tummy rub) Lassie acquiesced: "Look, if you are looking for someone who eats mice, you only need look to those who eat them...and we all know who lives at the address where the crime is said to have taken place.

Word is now out that the source of this malicious rumor might be none other than Mr Poximus. When we called by his office his secretary said that Mr Pox was unavailable for comment and felt that he was the cruel victim of a canine-vendetta.

Personally I like Canberra. Maybe it's my soft spot for rural settings over mega-tropolis cities, but there is one problem in Canberra and thankfully it only happens once a year.....Summer-nats For those who don't know what summer nat is, it is a weekend long car and motorbike enthusiasts weekend. For one long weekend Canberra is besieged by hotted up cars, people doing burn outs in the streets, fights and all manner of family goodness! We had one car staying nearby who every time they drove past made the house rumble like it was under the flight path of a 747.

News has just arrived here that Poktori's sparring partner Totoro (who recently moved back to Amsterdam from Seoul) has adopted a son. Totoro apparently drops him in his water bowl a few times a day, so the little one can drink and stay in the pink (euh, red). As you can tell, little Pacman-features here is a little upset over the whole thing.

Some one, and I am not going to name any names, has been spreading a vicious rumour that I just left half a mouse on the mat outside Dane and Heajin's house this morning. I would like you to know, DANE, that first of all, I would never leave food like that for no reason, that secondly, it was self-defence, and thirdly, that that is the LAST time I am leaving the best bit for you to dunk in the bin. Next time you're looking for chunky delights, buddy, catch your own... Yes, we know, here in Canberra possums are nothing special. We all have the sound of an old table-dust buster on our roofs every once in a while. But this little baby possum was sitting outside my work office. He liked the smell of the cheese I left on a branch near him, though he dared not to come eat it. With my dear friends Dane and Heajin away on academic business, I hope he'll work on his mini engine sound. It's much too quiet here. :o( RHM

This company based in Rozenburg, the Netherlands, conned me and my father some months ago, and it is only fair I place this on the web in the hope I may warn others NOT to trust this company too much. DTC Animal Transport BV charged us for an appointment they say they made with my father, and had no clue as to what the true legal requirements for pets travelling to Australia were. If anyone would like more details on how this company almost screwed things up completely and managed to get 71 Euros off my bankaccount for absolutely nothing, please contact me. I never dared complain about them when they still had my cat, but since he's arrived here now, I feel I should warn others. This company sucks. RHM
