Do you want to know what South American media have to say about Italy-Australia?
I am far from being a good translator, but the idea is there... if you guys find any grammatical horrors, sincere apologies! hj
(http://globoesporte.globo.com/ESP/Noticia/0,,AA1224594-5187,00.html)
Tr: The Azzurra played bad…
El Mercurio/Chile (Santiago): …se fabricó un penal que el árbitro español Luis Medina Cantalejo se equivocó en sancionar, puesto que no hubo falta del defensor australiano… (http://mundial.emol.com/include/detalle_noticias.asp?id=223223)
Tr: [Grosso] invented a penalty that Spanish referee Luis Medina Cantalejo mistakenly authorised, as there was not such foul from the Australian defender [Lucas Neill]…
El País/Uruguay (Montevideo): Un penal más que dudoso de Lucas Neill sobre Fabio Grosso en el descuento… (http://www.elpais.com.uy/06/06/26/ultmo_223646.asp).
Tr: A more than dubious penalty of Lucas Neill to Fabio Grosso during the additional time…

Paint chip wallet
Often when you are planning to paint your house you get paint chips from the hardware store with all the different shades of colours so that you can hold them against the wall and get a feel for what colours are best. Well here is a very nifty solution to make use of all those left over paint chips! Click through the pictures and they will provide instructions. Paint chip wallet
Web site update, at last! Second reincarnation!
Friends,
I am pleased to announce that I have finally gotten around to updating my web site at uni! The site is now in its second reincarnation with a new format and some new pages. The up an running pages include home, academic history, work station and contact details. I will upload some more stuff just as soon as I have some more free time. In the meanwhile though, if you have any thoughts or suggestions on the format, content or whatever, please let me know. Cheers,

He is charming, indeed...
"Nadie tiene unos dientes tan bonitos como yo y nadie es tan guapo como yo. ¿Por qué alguien con unos dientes tan lindos no debería reír? Al contrario, hay gente a la que le gustan" (Ronaldinho)
Tr: "No one has such beautiful teeth like mine and no one is as handsome as me. Why shouldn't someone with such gorgeous teeth keep smiling? Which is more, there are people who like [that smile]" (Ronaldinho)
THIS IS EXACTLY WHY WE LIKE THIS FELLA SO MUCH!!! hj

In memoriam: Vignette (? - 18 June 2006)
Yesterday my mum's dog – Vignette – passed away. It was unexpected, because she was very healthy. The vet told her that because she had been barking at this big toad for too long in the blistering sun, she'd become overheated. At first my mum thought she'd been poisoned by the toad as she had foam around her mouth and was breathing oddly, but later at around 8 in the morning, the vet told her she had died of a stroke.
Vignette, who was given to my mum many years ago as a surprise present by some vagrant, was a real companion who hated cats and dogs (especially the little smelly ferret dog of the neighbours for which we gave Vignette all credit ^^), and loved my mum. A true Jack Russel implied that she would complain lots when having to get out of bed too early, or actually go where my mum wanted to go, but she could be as sweet as a cat, and had great facial expressions. She will be greatly missed, though by my mum of course more than anyone else.

Oh dear... The Scoville Scale
A scale developed by Wilbur Scoville in 1912, to measure the heat level in chillies. It was first a subjective taste test, but since, it has been refined by the use of HPLC, the unit is named in honour of its inventor. The original Scoville test asked a panel of tasters to state when an increasingly dilute solution of the pepper no longer burned the mouth. Roughly one part per million of chilli 'heat' rates as 1.5 Scoville units. The hottest pepper recorded was a Habenero. Pure Capsaicin measures 16,000,000 Scoville units.

DIY wide angle lense
I thought that taking those wide angle shots required a good SLR camera and a specialised lense, but I came across this site offering a cheap and nifty way to achieve the same effect with ordinary digital cameras. Have a look here.

The Return of the King
Poktori is home!!! The vet on special duty to investigate Poktori called me the evening before yesterday, saying that the bloodtest was all positive: no signs of kidney or liver failure, but she admitted to having been worried. Another call from the quarantine centre the next morning confirmed that Poktori was his old self again: "he's trying to lick and headbutt us all the time". After all that, today the day had finally arrived: release... Dear friends Dane and Heajin were there, of course, to help me get the big man out. Candice, the girl who had sung Happy Birthday with me for him last week, escorted the little fella out of the prison gates towards the car: "he was one of our favourites; we've all said goodbye to him and given him a big hug". Dane took us all home within no time, and so after a long month that included two some 10-hour flights and a long drive to Canberra, Poktori finally set foot on Ozy ground. He then inspected our parts of the house, and admired the garden. It is 20:30 when I write this, and Poktori is standing on my desk, inspecting the lamp next to me. He looks happy, and he seems to like it here. I am, of course, over the moon so I celebrate our reunion with a piece of nougat from our dearest that I had safed for a special occasion. In a few hours Poktori and I are going to watch the WC opening ceremony together in bed: he's managed to get here just in time... RHM

And now for something completely different - Pt. 3
I know, I know - its long overdue, but I have been busy working. Over the past weeks I have been busy reading and writing and this morning I think I have reached "a point" where I can pause, wipe the sweat from my forehead and take a deep breath. In between my work I have managed to slip in a few sessions of net time and have compiled yet another list of net ephemera. Hope you like them.

Poktori ill
Today I received a phonecall from AQIS saying that Poktori was ill (vomiting and diarrhoea) asking me whether I would pay for vet to drive there and have a look at him. The vet rang me later saying he might have a kidney or liver problem considering his age, but that she had to run some blood tests to see what might be the problem. Tomorrow they're going to feed him some special diet (they stopped feeding for a day because he could not keep it in), and I hope you will all keep your fingers crossed for me and him that he eats it and starts feeling better. Having to listen to the vet saying, "if he is like this tomorrow, I would like to take him into our hospital" really is not a very nice thing to hear three days before his scheduled release... :o( RHM

Jarig!!!
Yesterday my dad Evert turned 65, and today my Poktori turned 9 (x 7 = 63), so it was a very special week; in a few months my dad and Poktori will be the same age. Today, in Sydney, I shuffled into Poktori's prison carrying balloons and a small sardine-cake present from Dane and Heajin. You can see how my voice woke him up and turned another lonely day into a rather nice one. He sends big cuddles and headbutts back to all those dear friends who sent theirs to him. And the birthday cake? Finished before I left...
On the way back the inevitable happened: got stuck on the curb of the highway because my windscreen wiper just blew off, and the rain was too heavy to see anything (and it was pitch black). It was sooo cold, and when I rang emergency services, they said it might take 90 minutes. After a rather unnerving 15 minutes, an angelic truck driver kindly helped me out by taking off the only remaining wiper and attaching it to the bolt on the left (all that in pouring rain, darkness and freezing temperatures...). The driver just wished me a safe journey home, and then went on with his business with the words, "no worries, mate". Anyone ever seen Spielberg's Duel? Definitely not this guy... RHM
